Healing comes when we know and speak the truth. 🔸 Those of us who have experienced trauma or abuse may have learned to downplay the seriousness of what happened to us. Some of us may have forgotten it, denied it, minimized it, rationalized it, laughed it off, etc. Essentially, we've found a way to cope while going through it. This is normal. It's the body's protective mechanism to help us to survive the incident(s) until it was safe to deal with it. God created this protective mechanism in our brain to keep us alive. 🔸
After surviving the trauma or abuse, the next step is to heal. The coping strategies mentioned above had its purpose during a horrific time in our lives but now it's keeping us from fully healing. Telling ourselves the truth of those experiences will reopen wounds. Thus, it is important to see a trusted and experienced trauma informed therapist. 🔸 Not only do we need to know the truth of what happened but we need to speak about it to others. This can happen in a variety of ways: support groups, telling loved ones, speaking engagements, blogging, posting on social media, writing a book, etc. 🔸 I have learned these two aspects (knowing and speaking the truth) bring immense healing but it takes time and hard work. The process should not be rushed as the mind needs time to handle the truth. As it processes the information and learns to accept the truth, the mind starts to heal. 🔸 Most of all, God wants you to know and speak the truth so you can heal and be the person He has created you to be. 🔸 "And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free."
