Journey To Wholeness

Self-Care is Not Selfish

Every time we get on a plane, the flight attendants go over the safety protocols in case there is a loss of cabin pressure and/or if the yellow oxygen masks drop from above. They stress the importance of putting the oxygen mask on yourself first BEFORE helping others. Why? Because if you start helping others without it, you'll pass out. You might be able to help one or two people before you lose consciousness. But if you put the oxygen mask on first, then you can help many people.
❤️
Many times in life, we fail to put on our own oxygen mask first before helping others. In other words, we neglect to take care of ourselves. Some of us might have been taught it is selfish to take care of ourselves and we must put others first all the time. So, we run around taking care of other people's needs before our own and feel tired at the end of the day and force ourselves to do it all over again the next day. This is not healthy nor Biblical.
❤️
Matthew 22:39 says to love yourself as equally as you love others. This means taking care of yourself is important. (See previous post on this Bible text.)
❤️
1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 says your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and your body belongs to God. As such, it is your responsibility to take care of it, which includes eating healthy, exercising, drinking water, getting plenty of rest, being temperate in all areas of your life, etc. When you don't do that, you are indirectly telling God that you don't care about His temple (your body).
❤️
May is #MentalHealthAwareness month. Taking care of your needs is one way to take care of your mental health. You matter. Your health matters. Schedule time in your planner for self-care before your body hijacks you and forces you to do so.
