🎶 Jesus loves the little children 🎶 All the children of the world 🎶 #Red and #yellow 🎶 #Black and #white 🎶 All are precious in His sight 🎶 Jesus loves the little children of the world I grew up singing this song. Although I sang this song outside of my house, it was a different story within my Southeast Asian home and culture. In my culture, it was not acceptable to be of a dark skin tone, especially for women. Nearly everyone I knew in my culture talked about how desirable it was to have a "white" person's skin tone. Many tried to lighten their skin tone, including me. Female women in my family would tell me that my skin tone was too dark. So they bought me skin lightening creams from the motherland to make me look "prettier" and "more appealing" as a potential matrimonial match.
It was especially concerning to those families whose daughters were of a darker skin tone as the parents would groan how difficult it was to find a man who would marry them. What my culture said repeatedly was that the wife needed to be a lighter skin tone than the husband. But no explanation was given as to WHY it had to be this way. The hue of one's skin tone was even a question on a person's profile in all the Indian matrimonial websites about 15-20 years ago. Due to this convoluted thinking, I also bought into the lie. Somewhere along the way, I learned it was not loving nor Christlike. It took time to reprogram my mind since it had become so ingrained in me. It doesn't make a person feel loved or accepted. It makes them think there is something wrong with them. It can also lead to low self-esteem, low self-worth, depression, anxiety, etc. As the song goes, #Jesus loves ALL skin tones and they are all precious to Him. Let's be like Jesus and love others no matter what their skin tone.
